FIVB Announces Rule Update for Paris Olympic Volleyball Tournament 2024
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has issued a statement regarding a significant rule change for the upcoming Olympic volleyball tournament, allowing teams, for the first time, to include a non-competing “AP” (Alternate Player) athlete on their rosters, increasing the team size from 12 to 13 players, with the AP athlete able to replace an injured player for medical reasons.
Unlike before, the new policy allows for more flexibility, with the previous rule preventing a replaced player from returning once substituted. Still, under the new regulations for Paris 2024, an injured athlete can rejoin the team if they recover or if another player gets injured.
The AP athletes, although able to train and attend matches with the team, will not stay in the Olympic Village unless additional accommodations are provided by the National Olympic Committee (NOC),.
This policy is exclusive to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and will be reviewed for potential adjustments for the LA 2028 Games.
